External linkA Case of Murder by Vernon Scannell
This is a poem about a nine-year-old boy who murders his pet cat after being left in a basement flat. It's almost as if the boy has seen 'red' when he's attacking the cat; he is extremely violent, aggressive and reluctant to stop. However, when the cat dies, he is overwhelmed with guilt.
The question is ask after the poem is: Who do you feel most sorry for? The boy, or the cat?
