Poem introduction

This poem has been praised by several critics as the most full and perfect account of a mystical experience. It is a fragment of a much longer poem, in a style of sub-Byronic melodrama, in Emily Bronte’s Gondal Poems notebook. From this she extracted, for publication in the collection of poems with her two sisters, this compelling self-contained lyric with a new and far more effective ending.
