The Shield of Achilles

W. H. Auden

Poem introduction

This is a poem called 'The Shield of Achilles' which takes a theme from Homer where you remember that the armourer, Hephaestos, makes a shield for Achilles at the request of his mother, Thetis, and on which you see the whole world, from farming and various things going on. And this is an imaginary picture of the kind of shield that at a later date he might have made. So 'she' here means Thetis, and 'he' is Hephaestos.
