The Summer of Love
We were clappy-happy, we were hippy-dippy -
We were building Eden by the mighty Mississippi.
We were very certain, we were very sure,
We were very righteous, (and we were very poor),
And we scolded non-believers and we taunted the police,
And our women made us tea while we puffed the pipes of peace.
We were sappy-happy, we were hippy-trippy -
We were building Eden by the might Mississippi.
We were dressed in satin, army coats and beads,
And we sat cross-legged whie we sorted stems and seeds,
And we swapped each others' lovers and our hair grew wild and woolly,
And our rooms reeked of joss and our women of patchouli.
We were clappy-happy, we were hippy-dippy -
We were building Eden by the mighty Mississippi.
And we lived in San Francisco, or else in Notting Hill,
And we made a lot of babies though our women took the pill,
And we played a lot of Zappa and Dylan and the 'Dead,
And we talked a lot - but mostly I've forgotten what we said.
There are so many good poems in the Children's Archive, it's hard to know where to start! I'd like to share with you...
